Batteries are a necessity in our daily life. Different types of batteries contain different types of metals. These include: lead, zinc, manganese, nickel, cobalt or iron. Also included are heavy metals such as mercury and cadmium. Usually the batteries we find at the beach are ones that have been seriously battered and look broken, which means that all these pollutants could well be making their way into the environment and thus the food chain! Every place that sells batteries should have a collection point for used batteries, please make sure you dispose of them responsibly!
