Polystyrene

Floating marine debris often attract various creatures along its journey. Polystyrene is a cheap, light weight foam plastic material with exceptional thermal insulation and anti-shock properties. It is therefore often used as cushioning and thermal barriers for containers. However, due to the nature of the material and manufacturing methods, many polystyrene fabrications are relatively loose and are prone to breaking apart and falling out after light collisions. Of course, these fragments, just like other floating marine debris will also take on a few of nature’s passengers and embark or their long journey around the world.
