PLA Coffee Cup

This is one of those bio-degradable plastic cups we found at the beach. Doesn't that strike you as odd? PLA stands for poly-lactic acid, it is a type of plastic derived from corn or other vegetable starch. Even though biodegradable, it actually only works at certain temperatures, humidity, and with sufficient oxygen. Those that end up in the environment, often end up surviving just fine like any other ordinary plastic materials, and don't degrade at all.
